The Drau Cycle Path from Lake Faak: arriving by bike & a stage base at the lake
One of Europe's finest river cycle paths runs right through the region: the Drau Cycle Path. How to reach it from Lake Faak, how to arrive by bike and rail, and why Strandhotel Faak makes a rewarding quiet base.

On the great river cycle path
Lake Faak lies at the gateway to the Drau Cycle Path
Anyone planning a longer cycling trip is spot on at Lake Faak: the region around Villach is Carinthia's cycling hub, and running right through it is the Drau Cycle Path – one of Europe's most famous river cycle paths. Rather than changing accommodation every night, many guests prefer to stay in one lovely spot and ride the stages as day trips.
Strandhotel Faak right on the southern shore is ideal for exactly that: a quiet base, your own private beach to unwind on after a stage and a lockable bike room for your bike. You'll find the shorter loops right by the lake in our article Cycling routes around Lake Faak.
Question 1 · The Drau Cycle Path
What is the Drau Cycle Path – and how do I reach it?
A 5-star river cycle path right across the Alpe-Adria area, which you can head for comfortably via Villach.

Toblach to Maribor, awarded 5 stars
The Drau Cycle Path (R1) runs for around 366 kilometres from Toblach in South Tyrol to Maribor in Slovenia and has been awarded five stars by the ADFC – one of the few routes in Europe with this rating. It is considered flat, family-friendly and well signposted.
From Lake Faak you reach it via the cycling hub of Villach; the Gailradweg and the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path also connect in the region. You'll find exact stages, lengths and elevation profiles on the official cycling portals such as kaernten.at/rad.

Question 2 · Getting here
Can I arrive by bike or rail?
Yes. The region is easily reached by rail: via Villach main station (around 13 km from the hotel) you'll be with us quickly, and local trains in Carinthia usually take bicycles. On the ground, the bike buses carry you and your bike comfortably to the starting points – usable with the Erlebnis CARD included with us.
Of course, combining car and bike works too. For your bike, the hotel has charging points and a lockable bike room. You'll find all the ways to reach us on the page Getting Here & Location.

Question 3 · A base rather than changing accommodation
Why Lake Faak makes a good stage base
A river cycling trip doesn't have to mean repacking your bags every evening. From Strandhotel Faak you ride the stages as day trips and return each evening to the same quiet spot: to your own private beach, to the Lakeside Restaurant and to your room on the southern shore.
